Faculty presentation

we ran the ideas for the game major past the faculty today – just for discussion and comments. No major problems at this point. Some people want more literature classes – having stories would be good. There are electives we can push the students towards. The trick is convincing the students they need classes to have info to make ames about. I’m thinking the advisors need a list of electives that are better for gaming than others. Might be the topic, might be that the prof is open to the student doing game oriented projects.

We want art classes – there’s no room – i wonder if we could put in to get a student from cornell or a local artist to teach one class a semester – maybe drawing one semester and 2d design the next – just for the game students. or maybe for the game students and the bfa in cinema students.

The dean is on board and so is the assistant dean. They think it will go thru the the curriculum committee
without any problems (hopefully not wishful thinking)

I also ran it by the prof who’s going to be the new chair of my dept. The new chair has lots of questions about resources – my answer – i don’t know. i have to figure out what i won’t be able to teach anymore if we do the game stuff and estimate how many new faculty we need – which kind of depends on how many students we take (do we need 1 section or 2 of classes) It is good to hear people talking about hiring new faculty for the program – but I have feeling that is going to piss off some other programs.

A few of the production faculty have mentioned doing stuff in the game program – doing a sound class or developing short workshops on production techniques – that’s good to hear because the game guys are going to need a sense of camera movement and lighting and audio. And because it will be good int he long run to get more people involved in the program.

Speaking of growing the program – we gotta hook up with some people in business – they have some ecommerce classes – would be good when we’re talking about monetizing the casual games. They have entrepreneur classes – which folks who might want to start their own game courses or who might have to work as freelancers would need.

I got the new version of hte igda curriculum today – time to do some reading. More in a later post about it.
