from the game design workshop book p. 208-109 (which i like)
use the play matrix - x axis goes from skill (left) to chance (right), y axis goes from (physical dexterity (bottom) to mental calculation (top)
- have them put various games on the chart like WOW, Twister, Monopoly, Clue, pin the tail on the donkey, tag, some of the historic games we play
- do their 5 favorite - what does that say about their game preferences, compare around the room (be nice to have overlays? or shared whiteboard maybe?)
- ask them to generally describe games in each quadrant - what do they have in common
- way to get them to think about games, game mechanics, and to realize that people like different kinds of games
