textbook notes – SL book – ch1

from SL book – Ch1 – Welcome to SecondLife

words for a vocab quiz – avatar, sim prim inventory, Linden rez, landmark, mainland, teleport (TP), TOS (terms of service), alts, griefers, newbie

features introduced

inventory (can carry unlimited # of things, some stuff in inventory of new characters)

landmarks – map locations of cool places (landmarks go into inventory) – region name and xyz location

Linden Exchange (like foreign exchange for buying L$ for US$)

map & minimap – ways to move and see what’s going on around SL – can see if there are other people where you’re going or a scheduled event, SLURLs take you to a specific spot

chat, IM, voice – ways to communicate – private and public

landowners – pay real money to buy space on a server, can set rules over and above the TOS on their land

what to do – no quests, nothing you have to do – some newbies find it confusing, you have to decide what to do and when just like real life, don’tearn XP for doing stuff have to get a job to make money or buy Lindens iwth US$, has a lot of locations to visit (make sure they’re still available), need to make some additional suggestions like giant snail racing cool houses, corporate sites more things to do like visit the zoo, hang out at hte greenies house, race cars on Nissan island

economy – lindex, exchange rate average cost of land (on mainland), list of possible jobs on p. 20-21

sometimes new players offend because they think they should act in SL like they do in other online games people act weird because they’re anonymous

be sure to look at hte pictures – see what avies look like, kinds of geography, indications of the kinds of pics you can take for your blog and homework once you learn how to dothe camera controls (do they talk about using the built in camera – hmmm – may have to add that)
