textbook notes – SL book – ch3

from SL book – ch3 – Communication and Social networking

most comm in SL – chat =Â real time typed text visible to anyone in the area so it’s local, IM = private real time typed text between you and a specific person (or group) who can be anywhere in world

have to get a feel for how fast the other people type – are they slow typer, do they type lots of full sentences before hitting return to send, and sometimes they’ve lost hteir connection and can’t finish typing till htey log back on – don’t wnat to be rude and type over htem so try to get some sense that the other person is finsihed

goes over chat interface basics (i think it has changed a little) – could try chatting and shouting on the Park island to notice the different avatar animations

chat history is important – can cut and paste it into word processor or email to have record of conversation – don’t publish chat transcript without permission

can also cut and past IM history, can have your IM’s sent to your email so you get htem when you’re not in SL

can turn on logging – don’t think they mention that – not so important for the game guys but good for the qual guys

mentions the notecard on p. 52, that it’s stored in your inventory and that you can share

directions for animating with gestures – some you can enable and put in a command that you’ll type in chat to tell the avatar to do it, others you access from pull down menus or the gesture menu – gestures not used much because they’re not the easiest thing to use but they would really help improve communicaiton and make conversations more interesting to watch, can buy new gestures in world, there are emoter huds to animate avatar face (otherwise they are wooden) – hud has a variety of facial expression for you to choose from – again make conversations and face to face meetings more interesting, also animation overrides (AOs) to let you add different animations to override defaults – so you can walk differently than most people (have to turn them off iin laggy areas to help with processing nad sometimes AOs interfere with poseballs

calling cards – like a business card – get contact info, easier to start an IM/chat conversation later but doesn’t have the same weight as a friend link (not sure how you create a calling card or if they’re still used – gotta check)

friendship – added to your friend list – like on facebook – you ask and htey can say whether htey want to be friends or not. Always ask first – would you like to be friends – before you do it to them. Friends can see when you log in (so if you’re my friend you’ll be able to see when i come online). You can let friends see you on the map (you do not get that with me – none of my friends do), and you can let them modify your stuff which is very handy when working together on building something (of course they can accidnetally delete the whole thing too)

groups – want people to find and join some good groups – good way to find people, can only have a certain number of groups, people in the group like something similar look for them in search (make sure that’s still true) and look at their profiels and ask to join/join, everyone can see your groups by looking at your profile , can IM to a group anybody can create a group for $L100 (about 50 cents) – we have an IC students group

talks about title (text over your head) – when you join a group, their title becomes your default – just go into groups and select none and activate to have no title

p. 58-59 – common communication mistakes and p. 63 has some commonly used slang and acronyms (some familiar to IM users in general, others SL specific like avie and HUD)

another good tutorial to get them to go talk to somebody

need something about voice since they have built in mics in the laptops
