lots of detail that i don’t care much about except for these bits

cards 1st mentioned in spain in 1371 and by 1380 had spread to italy, france switzerland

pretty sure they don’t exist before then because there’s no mention of htem in any of the popular culture of hte time – poems, histories,  stories like by chaucer

early mentions were in prohibitions related to gambling

early cards were hand made and very individual/unique

cards not just for rich people back then – but a lot of cards produced as collectibles for rich people and htey’ve survived – so it kind of looks like only rich people played

card importation banned in england in 1463, then in 1495 card playing banned – not because of gambling but because authorities considered that games took up too much time of the lower classes
