reading notes – world of games – dominoes

A game of DominoesImage via Wikipediadominoes (name of hte game is the same as the name of the things, origin of the word unclear might be named after a cloak worn by priests that was black and white) dominoes can be shuffled like cards – they have solid colored backs and you play them with the dice facing you so no one can see- question – do men and women play dominoes together

descendents of the six sided dice, some developed in egypt, but developed independently in europe and china – different rules, different look

europe games developed probably in italy in 18th century, brought to england by french prisoners of war (?), a cafe game in the 19th and 19gh centuries lots of people cheated (must have been gambling), played individually and in teams

chinese dominoes – 32 in a set, numbers from 1 to 6, chinese game spun off mah jong (has special tiles – came to america in early 20s (see the parker bros book) and rules changed to be more interesting rules supposedly made more elaborate and played in lots of different ways, mah jong boom into the thirties and then it faded, in asia it can be played with cards instead of dice, tiles are in suits)

western dominoes – numbers up to 6, plus zero , there’s a double zero, can go up to 9s american sets go up to 10 and 12 (need larger sets if you have lots of people playing

some originally made out of bone out of ivory
