next yera’s conference 6/25-26 (thursday & Friday) in dallas

industry sending mixed messages – some say they want big thinkers but in the interviews it’s all tools and skill focused, cmpanies want it all, gotta have strong tech skills just to be considered

game companies have strong feedback culture – gotta learn how to give and how to take it

new grads have to expect to be doing crap work for a couple of years before promtoin

a question i had about our program – can we cut back on the writing since most writing jobs are contracted out, we could put in a couple more game making classes instead, need other kinds of writing like bug reports, technical writing, design docs, and the game designer is the original story teller on the game – it’s their vision

every program – especially interdisciplinary ones need a process established to change curriculum

recent grads aren’t going to be lead anything for several years

2d level design getting more important with increase in iphones and mobile games

writing and design different, writers do dialog

student games short so don’t need epic stories, there are basic concepts we can teach like character development, heroes journey, games could use existing stories and tell them in new ways

what i heard people talking about with regard to students – need experience with game builders, game engines, middleware engines, content creation tools (3d modeling, audio prod, 2d art for textures, need experience with genre specific development, need big group project, need experience making games for consoles, mobile phones, need to make casual games, facebook games, serious games – - because industry big and growing – not just console or PC, not just AAA games

have students make games using stuff you give them – here’s a box of stuff, here’s 5 words, take your favority hobby – - whatever – and turn it into a board game, need to be flexible designer creator so you can come up with ideas during interviews, get so you can apply game design concepts to whatever interviewer gives you
