book for spring semester class – not!!! Too expensive

I think i’m going to go with adams & rollings Fundamentals of Game Design – it’s part of the game design and development series and they have a long history in the field. There are a lot of good design books on teh market right now so it’s a tough pick. This one has some multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter that hte students can use to test themselves (they do them, we go over hte answers in class, could do them as a quickie quiz at the beginning of class…). GOod exercises that stress analyzing existing games too.

First part is all the game design elements – story, character, creating user experience, game play, core mechanics game balancing

2nd part is different genres. walks reader thru how the elements are often applied in the genres – what kind of core mechanics you see in this genre versus others. Might make a genre based assignment and each group would only read one of the chapters in depth

Guess we won’t be reading this – it’s $82 on amazon -  and $92 from the publisher. Yikes
