wiki project
- report on a news source – each person gets a news source – what kinds of stuff, authors, examples of stories
- i’ll put up some samples on board game news (not as much of that so they can’t do it as an assignment, but we’ll have it as references and as a news link)
organize class around player culture – do the big picture talk with the circles but put the player in the center, then game companies, the media, govt, indy developers, retailers around and focus on fleshing out each circle. need some kind of ongoing graphic to show what we’ve covered. have them write at the end of each about the topic and make connections to the preceding topics and to the idea of hte player – they have to write more, need several projects on player culture – could work in the survey of players to go over some research methods and a content analysis of various casual mmo’s for another research project, they’l have writing assignmetns, focus on doing stuff like research and project organizing and analyzing news sources and creating stuff for hte game metaculture -then figure out the content we need to cover
focus on board games – playing not enough, gotta talk abut their history more, get some info on some key designers, have students compare rules, endings, winning, strategies vs luck so in the critical analysis we can make board games, have them make the ads for the boardgames – need some more specific instructions and a list of criteria for different ad types like tv ads are 30 seconds and print ads are full page…, we could do a comparison over time and country – get them to organize info graphically/spatially
need a form to fill out after playing each game during class to help them stay focused – like questions about rules one week and win conditions another and graphics a third – would be cool if we could put the responses online so we could compare them (but don’t want to leave them up from semester to semester). Guess the form could have them write their notes for the questions on teh end of hte semester project and they keep their sheets each week (or turn in for participation points and then I give back for them to keep for the end project
for the ad project – i like the general project idea – we need some more detail about ads – i need to put in some requirements for each medium – like 30 seconds for video ads and 8.5 by 12 for print, and need to put in some links to sample good ads
